We have received recent news of the passing of Himie Voxman, Professor Emeritus of University of Iowa School of Music and graduate of Centerville High School.

Himie Voxman actually went to the University of Iowa to study science but found success as a clarinetist and composer of music education literature. Many Centerville students today still use lesson books written by Voxman (some of which were even written with a former band director of Centerville, William Gower). Himie Voxman is recognized as one of the most influential American music educators of the last century.

Voxman, who enjoyed a long career at the University of Iowa as a student then a full-time faculty member before achieving professor emeritus status, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011. He was 99.

Please do take a moment to check out the following articles to read more about Voxman's life and career.

Portions of the Sound Innovations Method that we are using with the 5th grade band this year are available for free on the SmartMusic accompaniment program. The free subscription allows you to try out SmartMusic through the first 100 lines of the book. All of the normal SmartMusic features are activated with this trial. You can also access a metronome and tuner through the Help menu at the top of the SmartMusic program homepage and can import mp3 files and play them at any tempo. This would be a good way to try out the SmartMusic program to see if it is effective for your child in his or her practicing.

To get the free SmartMusic lines on your computer, go to www.smartmusic.com and follow the directions to download the program. When activating, put in the code listed on the first page of your child's Sound Innovations book. If you have trouble and would like help with this process, feel free to email Mr. Taylor at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Happy practicing!

There is nothing more frustrating to a young musician than looking at a piece of music and finding that they don't understand the instructions on the page from the composer. This tool allows students to look up the definitions of musical terms in their music. http://www.practicespot.com/dictionary.phtml?t=74

One of the most useful tools available to enhance home practice is SmartMusic. This interactive music software allows students to practice their method books, solos, and band music at home with on-screen visual aides, recordings, and an assessment tool that can help them to know if they are playing the music correctly.
