5th
Grade
Band
Students in the fifth grade band start to play their instruments at the
beginning of the year. After a process in which all students in fifth
grade are tested and recommended the "best fit" instrument for them,
the band begins with sectional rehearsals and individual or small group
lessons. At the sectional rehearsals, students learn the basics about
their individual instruments and reading music. After a few weeks of
sectional rehearsals, we combine the band and prepare for our first
concert which is usually in either November or December. The fifth
grade band also performs again in the spring with the fourth and fifth
grade choirs.5th Grade Band students use of the Standard of Excellence Band Method. This method book has the material that we use in band lessons for most of the first year. 6th

Band
Students
in
the sixth grade band have generally been playing for a year and
will, as a result, play more challenging music. Sixth grade band
students have the opportunity to take individual lessons with the
director and will continue to work out of the Standard of Excellence
Band
Method. The second book used varies from instrument to instrument and
based upon the needs of each individual student.
Sixth grade band students have an exciting opportunity to participate in the Solo/Ensemble Contest in Albia each year. At this contest, all sixth grade students perform a solo and many students perform various ensembles. Students receive a rating, comments from an adjudicator and a medal for each event in which they participate. Also in sixth grade band, students get to participate in the Little Red Wagon parade, perform at a home basketball game with the high school band, and perform at various occassions for the public and the student body. 6th

Jazz Band
Students
who
have reached the required proficiency level will be invited to
participate in the sixth grade jazz band in the spring. This group has
rehearsals before and/or after school based upon the schedules of those
students participating. The jazz band performs for the student body at
the end of the school year and works on jazz basics to prepare students
for junior high school jazz band. Other performance opportunities for
this group will be considered. If you know of a performance that woudl
be good for this group, please feel free to contact Mr. Taylor to see
if it would be possible for the group to attend.
The
Rank
System
The Rank System is a new incentive
program for the Lakeview band. With this system, students achieve new
ranks by accomplishing various tasks on their instruments. This system
is designed to motivate
students to develop an understanding of various musical concepts and to
learn scales and various technical skills on their
instruments. The ranks are based on the ranks in the top band of the
U.S. Marine Corps, "The President's Own."
